Allotment to the Gujarat cadre placed him in a state that offers no single template for policing. Within one jurisdiction sit petrochemical belts and pastoral commons, a coastline measured in thousands of kilometres, an international land border, and cities that absorb seasonal gatherings on a scale few forces anywhere handle routinely.

The first lesson of such a cadre is that method does not travel unaltered. What works in an industrial sub-division will not hold at a fishing harbour, and neither will survive contact with a frontier without being rebuilt. An officer learns early to distinguish between principle, which carries, and procedure, which must be re-earned in every new place.

Sub-divisional command is the first assignment in which an officer's decisions are their own. The scale is modest and the exposure is total: a handful of police stations, a defined population, and every complaint that population chooses to bring.

It is also where the real curriculum of policing is taught. How a station writes a first information report. How a crowd forms and how it disperses. How long a grievance can go unanswered before it stops being a grievance and becomes a position. None of this is examinable, and all of it determines whether a sub-division is calm.

Appointment as Superintendent of Police, Coastal Security, at Gandhinagar turned the work seaward. Coastal security is an unusual policing problem because its subjects are not, in the main, offenders. They are fishermen, boat owners, harbour staff and port workers whose cooperation is the actual instrument of security.

The apparatus — registration of craft, identity verification, marine patrolling, liaison with the Coast Guard and the Navy — only works if the community on the water regards it as reasonable. That reframing is durable: security architecture that ignores the people inside it is architecture in name only.

A tenure at Raj Bhavan is a different discipline altogether. The office of Governor is a constitutional one, and the ceremony that surrounds it — precedence, protocol, the exact choreography of a state occasion — is not decoration. It is the visible form of an institution, and it is judged by whether it is executed without visible effort.

The transferable lesson is exactness. In protocol, a small error is never small; it is read as an institutional statement. Officers who have worked close to constitutional office tend to carry that intolerance for approximation back into operational command, where it is equally useful.

On Independence Day 2025 the Chief of the Army Staff commendation was conferred on him in recognition of exemplary service during Operation Sindoor. The announcement was made publicly by the Director General of Police, Gujarat.

It is worth being precise about what such a recognition indicates. The Army does not commend a civil police officer for police work in the ordinary sense. It does so when the seam between military and civil responsibility — the movement of people, the security of installations, the management of a civilian population inside an operational area — has been held without friction. In a frontier district, that seam is where everything difficult happens.

What accumulates across such a sequence is not a technique but a set of calibrations — of when to intervene, how much force a situation actually requires, which relationships must be maintained before they are needed.
